Bio fuels in India

Posted: June 10,2007

Brazil does not import any oil...Can you believe it!!!.A country which is not in the top list of having oil reserves and which is a fast growing economy is absolutely insulated from the global oil market and the uncertain middle east which basically holds the entire world to ransom with its oil power and not to forget with their terrorists.

Reason for this...Brazil is a world leader in production of bio ethanol which is used either completely or mixed with gasoline for the automobile industry here that ive noticed...Its absolutely amazing..Ive read that Brazil makes its ethanol directly from sugarcane.I once went to the countryside in the Sao Paulo state on a roadtrip and observed pretty much an ocean of sugarcane cultivation..Wow..can you believe it still...no oil imports whatsoever!!!!!!!!

Now India imports close to three fourths of its oil, primarily ofcourse from the middle east and some african countries.Keep in mind, India is the worlds second biggest producer of sugar and having almost the same kind of sugarcane capacity as Brazil.I read this in a report just now before writing this..

Forunately for Brazil, they realised about the problem of oil dependency during the 70s and started on this project whereas we as a country are only now realising about this potential revolutionary environment friendly green fuel as people call it.

Some reports that i read have pointed out of the immense potential of bio fuels in India in terms of bioethanol, biodiesel and biogassified power and ofcourse the challenges and potential show stoppers as well. The governmnet fortunately has started taking steps and moving in the direction of making us energy sufficient one step at a time.

Not that i know all the technicalities involved as to how they will go about it , heck i dont even know all the technicalities of the software work that i do. :) . People should definetly google about this technology and the impact that it would have on our food grains, irrigation, forest land cover, alternate sources of biofuels ....makes for a damn good read...

All I can understand from all that i read, that there is a chance for us to replicate Brazil's model and maybe replicate it even better. All that is required is a strong will of the government in terms of framework and execution and that nobody should just sit on the experts recommendations of the opportunities and the barriers and act SWIFTLY...please!!!!!!!

Man...no oil imports......now that is a perfect dream for our country....or rather one of the perfect ones atleast..

P.S : for all the naysayers....one day in our country we will not have caste/religion based conflict..maybe class based based on economic status....now that would be another perfect dream wouldnt it be!!!!...
