Bad Habit and the Bad Character

Many times I've seen/observed that as soon as somebody talks of bad habits in a specific person, majority of the times the conclusion drawn is that the person is bad in nature/character.

However, I think characterizing a person as bad based on specific bad things he does is not the correct logic. A line should be drawn and it should be taken into account that person X may do certain bad things, emphasis on do, but he may not necessarily be a bad apple himself. Reverse analogy to this is how may times we may have seen somebody who didnt have any specific external bad habits as such but the mind/heart tells us that its not really worth corrupting and adulterating myself sticking around to what I see and hear from this particular being.

So if a person drinks like a phish, then yes he may have a bad habit but if a person drinks and then goes home and beats up his wife or become violent etc, then this is bad character. Alcohol is not the problem here, its the character problem which could be suppressed and comes out after drinking. The character no matter would anyways show up at different times and different instances even if the person is not consuming alcohol.

Same logic can be applied to so many other aspects in our daily lives where this distinction can be observed easily and that too even under extreme cases of drug or alcohol abuse for instance. Abuse of any subtance by anybody probably may not or may be some kind of wekkness in will or kind of psychological disorder, but cant be characterized as bad nature. Similarly take the case of lust. Lust as I know it is pure human nature. For whatever reasons, if somebody needs to satiate his lust for flesh then he may go to a brothel. Is the person bad. No, this act of going to brothel can be classified as good or bad depending on your position. But what is indeed sad is that somebody decides to force his lust on some unsuspecting and unwilling person through rape.

Real concern here however is not that there is no distinction between the bad habit and bad character, the concern really is that so much energy in general is spent on trying to classify and isolate people who need these certain kind of external stimulas for whatever reasons personal to them, that it becomes easy to forget that there are real beings who are inherently corrupt in their actions, in their minds and in their hearts and these are easily accepted as part of our society without any questions asked whether the same "rules" that have been made to perpetuate certain habits as "universally" bad, certain "rules" probably could not be made to make sure certain universal corruptness in character should not be tolerated as well.

  1. Couple of comments:
    1. Bad/Good is a personal interpretation of human morals. Something thats bad for you may be good for me or acceptible to me.
    2. You are true in saying alcohol isnt the problme however it may be the root of the problem... it may be a catalyst to bad character.
    3. I like the post but you are being a bit myopic in your thoughts... take a step back.. dont question the difference between bad character and bad habits... question what is good and what is bad and why you term it that way. Is being self centred bad? to some it is to some (us) it isnt.

  2. no but im not talking about aspects such as self-centered, narcissism, egoism etc..for which there will need to be a separate entry altogether.

this is only specific to certain external habits/stimulus that a person may need and how it is linked to a character of a person which may not be entirely correct.

  3. fair enough... all am saying is u r questioning the right things... however its just a symptom of a more holistic issue... whats really bad? and whats really good? herd mentality says smoking is a bad habit and those who smoke are bad people... however individualism seeks to say that smoking is a personal choice and that man is whatever he is because situations in life make him that way... people will always equate... u need to zone out the crowd and define urself based on what u consider moral
